The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble

Just stumbled upon the music of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. I'm captivated by the way they crafted their music (which seems to convey the ambience of a damsel trapped in the underworld) and then synchronize them to the visual content (usually in the form of old silent films).

There is a report floating around that Nine Inch Nail is collaborating with them. Wonder when that release will be out!

Vinyl Haven In Singapore

Just discovered this haven for vinyl collectors! Located at a rather obscure location, the warehouse stocks rarities, radio promos ranging from 60s to Modern Jazz, Tamil, Indian, Singles, Malay, Chinese, Rock, Classical & Dance.

It now tops my favourite list of weekend getaway to dig and explore the colourful music-scape of the 7" & 12" past.

Kota Kinabalu is no longer the quiet city that we used to know. In terms of urbanization, it is setting itself up as a party venue for those who are residing or touring in Brunei and the east side of Malaysia.

If you miss winter chill and need a great excuse to down that bottle of alcohol, Ice Bar has this famous ICE ROOM where you can go in to experience freeezing temperatures that go as low as -25 degree celsius. For that reason, the venue has earned the title of being the coolest hangout in town.

Due to our flight delay, we missed out on the early part of the party and arrived just in time to join the hyped-up crowd in celebrating the countdown with the Ice Bar resident DJs. At least for once, I was in another land experiencing the dawn of New Year 2010.

Morning came, we did a bit of a day tour around the city by ourselves. We stumbled upon this run-down building in the CBD district.

This is the view of the mountain from my hotel room window. I was kind of praying that the rain would not affect the night's turnout as it was pouring from late noon onwards.

Night came, I started spinning my Electrohouse set for the incoming crowd.

Nicky C from Malaysia spinning his Techno set.

Jamaster A from Hong Kong brought along a female GuQin instrument player to spice up his trance set.

One of crowd's favourite segment for the night was the beatboxing and dance moves of the Royal Phantom Dance crew. They are fun to watch, so I recorded snippets of their performance and uploaded them onto youtube - Check Part 1 & Part 2.

It was kind of like a rare breaks fans mini gathering, with one of my friends celebrating his birthday on this night. Occupying the premise that formerly belonged to Ministry Of Sound, Zirca is smaller in size but with a sound system that is as pumping as ever.

A pleasant surprise of the night was seeing the dazzling LED screen that opened up to a main stage where the booty beats & bass duo spun their live set.

Dubstep in a warehouse setting! Hell Yeah...like curious cats, we ventured out to Heineken Green Room to check out some dangerous riddim & bass. My main complaint upon reaching the venue - the sub-standard sound system that didn't do justice to the big bassy sounds of now.

First caught The Gaslamp Killer's wild performance on Mary Ann Hobb's Youtube video. When this LA native came on, his turntable skills and stage presence blew us away. Much respect for his courageous voyage into experimental sounds whilst turning his eccentricity into a rather fun audio experience for the crowd.

Dancing Queen At Bally (12.11.09)

Big shoutout to DJ Tirso. Without his recommendation, I wouldn't be spinning at Bally's Flagship Store Opening Party. The 158 year old Swiss luxury store is more known among the masses for their traditional image of quality shoes and bags. There was even a period of time when their expertise came in handy during the production of shoes for moon-landing.

In recent years, they have done things which make the younger jet-set consumers think otherwise. Hence, you can imagine my surprise when the store manager at their Ion Orchard outlet whipped out a leather jacket and a pair of jeans from their rack of luxurious wear. Still, the price of the outfit is rather daunting, but hey at least I had them on for a couple of hours.

That's my laptop and M-Audio Torq box sitting elegantly between the monitor speakers!

Once the champagne started to kick in, everyone become a dancing queen.

Going on unplanned trips is one of my favourite pastime on Sundays. Yesterday was no exception. Along the way, we stumbled upon some interesting subjects and took snapshots.

There was this art exhibition called Harmony and just like most around, the space was pretty dead quiet - a perfect getaway from the usual crowded malls! Here are some of the finds that fueled my mind!

If you wonder what that red or pinkish item is...my guess is that of the latest technology from China. Apparently, the theme of the above two is Karaoke. Hence, the wireless microphone that could detect the heat of humans, stay afloat and close to da mouths.

These two suit the fickle-minded peeps best. You could hang them around, be it portrait or landscape style and they'll still look right & quirky!

Among them, Drunken Pig is one of my favourite exhibits. Thought provoking and a reflection of the political and/or business model of the world right now!

Soon, it was time to leave wonderland for other ventures.

Cutting across Padang field, you won't miss this national monument which commemorates the glorious dead of WW1. Big up!!!

While at the Esplanade waiting for Freak to come out of the Gents, I wandered about and noticed these dreamcatcher-like net hanging up on the high ceiling.

Since there are see-through glass panel up there, you could see rings of blue sky combined with the lighting and net patterns to create these lovely sights!

Underworld Live In Singapore (24.09.09)

Got to thank DJ Nomsta for sorting out the entry to this one. Underworld has always been my all-time favourite dance act, so you can imagine my joy being able to catch them live.

Upon arrival at the big hall, found company and joined a friend of mine who was waiting at the rail. Once again, I was the front-line assembly fan, singing, dancing and snapping away with my camera.

Prop-wise, wind socks, lighting, cool visuals in the form of live video feeds...

It's the Eveything Everything, Lager Lager guy...Karl Hyde!

Besides prancing all around the stage, he strummed a little!

Darren Price and Rick Smith hovering their mixing desk most of the time. They are the ultimate hippies with the "I just got out of my bedroom studio and haven't got time to change" look.

Drop balloons, not pills on the massive! I lost my voice, but at least I had fun!

2Many Birthdays

There was at a DIY celebration up on the 18th floor of a hotel room a few hours ago. 5 birthday babies were sharing the spotlight together!

As I gazed up and down at the incredible view of the cityscape, it simply reminded me of the keys to my new apartment that will be ready for collection in three months' time. What can I say, it's a bundle of nerve and excitement!

Besides party food aplenty to munch, someone brought along a new gadget from Bangkok.

In light of the coming mooncake festival, the party theme was ChangEr's Angels.

Even though most didn't dress up in their most Cheena blue outfit, I took the easy way out and coloured them blue in the pictures. Ok, I admit I'm a little inspired by James Cameron's upcoming movie Avatar, where the inhabitants are kind of like the whole bunch...blue-ish and out in the matrix.

This is another cool documentary film by UK-based art collective The Light Surgeons. Taken from their live cinema performance TRUE FICTIONS, they combine video footage, stills and interviews recordings taken from Ground Zero on the 5th anniversary of 911 in 2006 and present them in such a way that it becomes an escalating argument about truth.

Did my first recording of interview with a special guest on Sunday and it turned out to be the last one. Word is out that the station will be moving to a new and bigger premise. With the renovation in progress, all recording will cease. That means my next fixation segment will probably happen in October instead of August.

It's been half a year since I joined the the family of Meshradio. It's probably the only place, outside my own bedroom where I can play whatever tunes that tickle my ears. Flash back to a year and half ago, I was at my most pessimistic when it came to all aspects of life over here; everything seemed stale and everyone smell suspiciously like a stinking corpse.

After staying away for a good period of time, it does wonder to re-kindle my faith in creativity and getting back into the music side of things. By keeping my head up and ears open, here's another installment of Fixation.

Singapore Cosfest 2009

Attended the Cosfest VIII event at Downtown East yesterday. To join in the carnival vibe, I roped in another friend of mine, Bing to cosplay as well. Somehow, it all felt like we were stumbling upon some fantasy land with bad sound system and J-pop overload.

Despite the noise pollution, I managed to keep my sights focused and snapped a few pictures for my FringE photography project.

After a few hours, we survived the heat and headed over to a nearby Japanese restaurant for dinner. We couldn't help but reminisce Tokyo's cool weather and extreme fashion. One day, we will go back again and experience the true blood Japanese cosplayers in action!

A bold and colourful personality in this fine city of sedated chimps, X'ho is no ordinary writer, musician and DJ. To hear his voice, it's all in the latest protest folk album, No Ordinary Country.

The CD launch event was a cosy affair held on a Thursday night. Since it was a first of its kind for me, the standout moment was his acoustic guitar strumming and the angst filled lyrics of Taming In The Name of 666...reminiscent of the 2006 elections and a poignant reminder of the reality that is skewed in favour of a one-party political system.

Saturday was Hasheeme's birthday. Our first sight-seeing stop was the Cosplay event @ Youthpark. Initially, I had planned to join in the Cosplay vibe by wearing a Lolita outfit. However, the combination of heat, rain and humidity changed my mind. I'm saving the rented outfit for the next big event in July.

After that, we headed over to my favourite haunt - Haji Lane. While Hasheeme got himself inked at Joseph's tattoo parlour, the two of us (mainly Hazel and me) spent most of the idle time cam-whoring in front of the cameras.

Picking up the odd pieces from my own wardrobe, I put together a lighter wear and was out the whole day looking kind of outlandish.

The day ended with dinner treat for the birthday boy at Little Bali! The food was wicked and the couple enjoyed their first dining experience in a rainforest setting!

Mission accomplished...I'm a top hostess!

Was way too busy with other chores, so it took me a little longer than usual to put out this party collage. The photos were taken from various albums. The theme for this night was about expressing one's inner mistress.

In the name of good fun, I went though lots of preparation work before hand to put together my gothic lolita look. Throughout the 4 hour set, I strained my neck. I was mixing up tunes with one side of the earphone whilst praying that the little hat stay on my head. Crowd-wise, it was a quirky lot...straights, lesbians, gays, transexuals and goths friends who swung by in their full gear.

The youth of SDAM were incredible to work with. They gave me more than what I imagined was possible with the locals.

To start with, there wasn't any sort of specific theme or art direction imposed by me. I want them to do their own thing and capture the lot in the midst of all the preparation. They bring their own clothes, do their own make-up and think of how they want to project themselves in their fantasy garb. I was merely a walking shadow clicking away with a camera.

When they smiled and posed for this, I saw the inner child in each and everyone of them. It's a priceless peek into their world!

Dressing-wise, they often provoke stares from the folks on the street. But beneath that cool and dark exteriors, they are simply exercising their creativity and having fun in their own terms.

I stumbled upon a picture of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi in their all-white outfit on E! online blog. I thought to myself, "What a lovely couple!" I read that Leonardo Da Vinci (the Italian polymath, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer) could be a gay. I thought to myself, "Such incredible talent!"

I saw RuPaul (a man who switches to a woman with good makeup and clothes) on the billboards of MAC, a Canadian company which sells genre-bending and drag-friendly cosmetics. I thought to myself, "Such Bravo!"

These are just some of the many well-known figures coming from the West. Despite living in the fringe and branded as un-natural, they continue to inspire and fascinate the common masses. So, does it really matter what our sexual orientation or identitiy is if one is able to contribute to the progress of the society? In animal kingdom, it isn't an issue. The animals just have sex and reproduce. With humans, they bring in a whole set of complicated issues.

For now, I wanna be that cub again because childhood was a great time and space to be in. It didn't matter if someone had breasts or dick. It didn't matter if one of my neighbours had eleven fingers. It didn't matter if we used blankets and cane as props for superhero fight. It didn't matter if there were more than 10 people in our 1-room flat and I cuddled up to be with my mum in the bedroom, my brother in the living room or joined my Dad to sleep along the corridor.

Hence for this project entitled FringE, I'm seeking that rare random moment where I focus on the beauty of COSPLAY. The subjects are simply real people who enjoy outfitting themselves with costume and accessory. There are 365 1/4 days in a year, so I'm sure there is always some fantasy characters lurking around, lightening up the mood of urbanites stuck in an otherwise uneventful day.

It was a struggle growing up in a Hokkein speaking family and adjusting to this island's policy of misrepresenting my heritage. The first day I was in Kindergarten, neither do I speak nor understand any Mandarin and English at all. It was made worse by the fact that my schools had all these "Speak Good English" campaigns and that most of my peers wanted to look like that blonde chick or dude in the covers of the coolest magazines. Nowadays they are more diversified; tried to fashion themselves and socialise as if their parents raised them up from the streets of hiphop commune!

That awkward and confusing period of accepting my background and home-spoken language is long gone. I speak and write their tongue now but never in my heart. There are still millions of us scattered all around the world. We may all be peasants, labourers or carving a living in the lowest class of the society, but we grow crops and put food to your mouths, build the streets or maintain the infrastructure whilst earn peanuts for all that toiling. Yet there is never enough for the obscene greed, no matter how we bend ourselves to fit into the mould of the perfect worker!

I understand the grand scheme of it all. They are no liberators. They are capitalists, bankers and dictators all rolled into one. The only hope I have for these childhood terrorists is the turn of tide: The day they are gagged-mouth and watch by the sideline...their own tongue and culture being phased out...their own children raised in a decadent culture.

If any of you feel it's stupid for Singapore agency or NTU to advocate the learning of dialects, hold a rally and say that loud to millions of us who grew up and spoke these dialects. A press statement issued from the comfort of air-con shelter via the the press goes to show how ignorant, intolerant and panaroid the authorities are to cultures which they deemed inferior. Have they ever spend quality time with the dialect-speaking population and get to know about their culture?

For sure, dialects are never gonna take over the national language one day, so what is stupid about offering them as an alternative subject for youths to engage in culture learning? If Amy Winehouse, Chris Brown and all that MTV pop culture is acceptable on national and cable TV, what's this double standard of stupidity?

First of all, I would like to thank Erica Tan for the shoutout and pointing the link to the latest statement issued by Marine Life Park. Whoever you are, I wish you well. It is reassuring to know that the ~~gambling den~~ resort management is willing to hear out the public concerns.

Pardon my poor editing skills in here for I'm neither MBA nor PHD qualified in any business, economic or communication skills. Alright, let's cut to the chase. My support for the Petition: Stop Sentosa From Importing Wild Animals is partly rooted in compassion for wild animals. They are best appreciated in their natural habitat and have been known to commit suicide under environmental stress. If in doubt, just subscribe to National Geographic channel and their magazines. You may dismiss my compassion as an attempt to project human motives on to wild animals. Similarly, I do wonder how your ~~gambling den~~ good organisation will ever compete with National Geographic's record of 'Inspiring People to Care About the Planet'.

The other part is based on the fact that there are alternatives out there other than building a Marine Life Park. If wholesome family entertainment is what you are targeting at, then all the more the venue is an inappropriate one for kids and youngsters to be in while the ~~stupid~~ sophiscated adults are chasing their high ~~gambling~~ gaming at the green tables or ~~betting~~ investing their fortunes on colourful chips in another room.

Sometimes, I do feel like the fool who fail to understand the mathematics of these nature / wildlife education and conservation. Why are they wasting water on the fish while we have to conserve water at home or in the working place? Is it more to do with showing the world how a ~~gambling den~~ resort could profitably substain the world's largest oceanarium? Enough of covering up or rationalising bad ideas, please!

Oi Sentosa...Leave Sharks, Dolphins & The Wild Animals Alone

Just close your eyes and imagine your loved ones being kidnapped and sold away to fatten the pockets of individuals. That's exactly what Sentosa Integrated Resort Marine Life Park is doing to the sharks and dolphins. Why can't they leave them alone and respect their rights to live freely in their natural habitat? Mainly because these animals have no voice and rights in the legal world.

Why would one ever need wild animals to amuse them? I rather have Amy Winehouse, Chriz Brown & other born-to-entertain hollywood characters in these resorts and parks! If you are reading this posting, sign the petition Stop Sentosa From Importing Wild Animals and shout out "NO NO NO" to the kidnapping!

Recording for this month's Fixation radioshow was much better than the last one. I learnt a lot from the previous mistakes and incorporated a few improvements to tighten up the show. Another good thing is my increasing love affair with the studio mic...I even blow kisses at it just now.

Ernie gave me a pleasant surprise before I kickstarted the show. He added a MicSwitch to the studio set-up which made my job so much easier. Just press and hold on to it and no more worries about the volume of the music while I'm yapping away...I was actually head banging to the tunes, so that now I'm looking forward to the day of the next broadcast.

There's a downer though...my Canon Powershot A95 went kaput on me while I tried to take a picture of the MicSwitch. Another trip down to the repair centre for my camera.

I Can See Flagpole Below

Down my block, it's always a celebration of Chinese festivals or deities' birthdays. Last Saturday evening, it was more than the usual lion or dragon dance routine. There was juggling of a giant flagpole - an art form dated back to ancient Dynasties. Whenever the flagpole seem like falling, the other studs would move in to prevent it from crashing onto the onlookers.

On the same night, Dara, Jeanine, Kirstin, Nigel & Paul were having their joint birthday soiree, so the whole bunch were really up for uplifting and friendly tunes.
